What to do in Popayan Colombia

It is called the white city because most of the buildings are painted white, which gives it that colonial touch that distinguishes the entire city, which has one of the largest historic centers in Latin America.

A historical fact of the city is that it had to be rebuilt after several of its buildings were affected by the 1983 earthquake, this caused, for example, traditional churches to have more modern interiors.

What should you put on your list when you visit Popayan?

  • Parque Caldas

The city was founded here in 1537, in this park there are immense trees and around it you can find the Cathedral of our Lady of the Assumption, the municipality and the clock tower, which is known as the nose of Popayan.

  • The Belen Hill

It is a hill that at the top has the temple of Belen. To go up you can take a cobbled path that has the stations of the cross. A very special place at Easter and from where you can have beautiful views of the city.

  • Morro del Tulcan

Have one of the best views of the sunsets in Popayan, go up to the hill to have a complete view of the city.

  • Bolivar neighborhood

Consider coming to this neighborhood early if you want to go to Plaza de Mercado Bolivar to eat, food stops being served around 2pm. I arrived a little later but I found a stall that was still open and they were able to give me corn soup, it was very tasty.

  • Puente del Humilladero

The name of this bridge is due to the difficulty of the inhabitants to get from one side to the other before its construction, now it is a beautiful architectural addition, it is very nice to come to take photos and cross the Bolivar neighborhood.

  • Mercado Alfonso López (La 13)

One of the most popular markets in Popayan. Here I was able to take a gastronomic tour of many traditional dishes of the city. Here you will find fresh products to prepare payanese traditions, but you can also taste traditional dishes such as the pipián tamale, the pipián empanadas or something more exotic such as the unborn calf that is the fetus of a cow.
