The Salt Cathedral is located in Zipaquirá, Colombia. It began as a makeshift chapel for the miners. Roswell Garavito began its construction in 1991 and finished in 1995 turning it into what it is today, a majestic structure that is 180 meters underground.
You have many options to get there, by private vehicle, through tours or on the Sabana train, the option that I took.
The price for nationals is 37,500 pesos or 10 dollars and for foreigners 60,500 pesos or 16 dollars. You can take the train at the Usaquen station in Bogotá and you can enter here for more information: www.turistren.com.co
- What will you find inside?
As soon as you enter, a viacrucis with 14 stations will begin. (Picture 1)
Then you advance into the Central Nave is impressive and you can see its main attraction, the 16-meter cross that sits above the altar. (Picture 2)
Finally a shopping area to buy souvenirs and do different activities such as getting massages or entering a museum.
If you go by train like I did, don’t get too distracted because you have to be aware of the itinerary.
- You should consider…
You can buy the ticket for the cathedral on the same train so that your entrance to the cathedral is faster. And when you finish the entire route, anticipate that the exit may take time. I waited 40 minutes in line to take the tram, another option is to go out through the entrance and not stand in long lines.
